Thanks for the very useful advice in determining the age of a Yamaha guitar….. I have one of the first Yamaha CJS accoustic guitars — fabulous instrument solidly played and gigged since purchase — sound just gets better and better and never adjusted…..

This surprises me as it would have been purchased not long before I got married, the following year. Given that finances were tight, wonder how I managed to get my fiancee to allow me to buy it ….. It has given me some nearly 40 years of playing pleasure….. I have a CJSii with the serial , which is odd since it has 9 numerals instead of 8.

I have just bought a Yamaha 6-string acoustic with the serial No. FGL, made in Taiwan. Any idea of its age, please?

That is the model number not the serial number. Check in the sound hole at end of neck where trust rod adjustment is. I have a early 70? Anyone have any info on it?

Hi i have a nippon gakki red label fg 12 string ,no made in….. These serial numbers will not correspond correctly to the serial number found on a Yamaha piano built in their Thomaston, Georgia factory. You can identify where your piano was manufactured a few ways, but the easiest way is to take note if there are any characters before the numbers.

However, for whatever reason, some models that were produced outside of the Hamamatsu, Japan factory have a serial number located on the pianos plate that shows a series of numbers without a letter proceeding it. Yet, stamped on the rear of the piano in the upper left corner will be the same serial number stamped on the upper left corner with the signifying factory letter proceeding it. Confusing, I know.

It's best to check behind the piano if the date serial number you look up doesn't seem correct.
